The thesis

Why this category, and why we are not first

Mahjong is already a proven mobile category: Mahjong Soul passed $100M lifetime revenue in Japan alone, and Vita Mahjong reached #1 on the US App Store in 2025. Most mobile titles are tile-matching solitaire. Real four-player mahjong with teaching and a local-players layer is the underserved lane, and the one we are building for.

These are published estimates from market-research firms and trackers. They are not SundayTech forecasts and publishers often disagree; where they do, both are shown.

The tabletop spend figure is from 2021 and is the most recent public Sensor Tower figure we found for that category. We have not found a current public sizing for mobile mahjong.

Where in the world

Where the downloads are

We aim to launch worldwide. Download volume is the best country-level data that is public across every category, so here are the ten biggest app markets and how each moved last year.

For Mahjongji

Existing demand we found evidence of is in Japan (Mahjong Soul, and a 2026 Mainichi report of a resurgence across ages) and the US (Vita Mahjong). Mahjong is resurging in Japan across all ages (Mainichi, Mar 2026). Four rule sets let one app serve different regional styles of play.

The $100 million ambition

What a $100 million a year Mahjongji would take

A scenario, not a forecast and not expected revenue. $100 million a year in revenue in three years is the ambition we are building toward. This is the arithmetic of it: how many paying subscribers that takes at three illustrative prices. Mahjongji has no such traction today and nothing here is a promise.

Illustrative price points chosen for the maths. They are not Mahjongji's pricing. The numbers here are a scenario, not results.
